The material is a strong, versatile packaging material that is universally accepted for recovery and recycling. Making the pulp from trees for use in corrugated cardboard creates sulfur dioxide pollution. Recycling corrugated cardboard into new products cuts the pollution generated by half.

Every day people purchase new shipping and moving boxes at a significant expense. While it is possible to find low cost, or even free, used boxes, the process is often time consuming, embarrassing, and full of frustration and uncertainty. Anyone who's ever moved has probably experienced either significant expense for new shipping boxes or countless trips to stores on search of usable discards. A new San Francisco startup, however, aims to change all that with an online process that makes it easy for those in need of boxes to find those who have extras to dispose of.

Many consumers are increasingly alarmed about issues such as the genetic altering of food or the rising use of pesticides—commercial broccoli is treated with 35 pesticides, for example, and carrots with 22—it’s difficult to find fresh, organically grown produce. That’s because organic farming is a tough, labor-intensive business that struggles to make a profit. Few growers are willing to convert from toxic chemical fertilizers to piles of aged chicken manure or to use boxes of ladybugs instead of insecticides to control pests. And how many will hire workers to sit on their haunches in rows of escarole, painstakingly pulling every weed, instead of quickly dousing everything in herbicide?

Wind power has traditionally centered around rotation. Dutch wind mills for pounding grain, rotating sail designs for pumping water, and most recently rotating turbine-based generators for creating electricity. These approaches work fine for the big picture applications for which they were designed. However, on the small scale, rotating systems have big problems. Efficiency losses in gear boxes, decreased efficiency of miniaturized airfoils and the need for specialized bearings to reduce wear.

Recycling old shipping containers is both a green and affordable solution to housing crisis. The dry freight container, a standard used for transport over water, was introduced in 1956. The unit is used extensively for long distance hauling of goods over water. Trains and trucks can also easily transport merchandise using these metal boxes.

This means that there's about 8 billion dollars worth of paper out there that can be collected and recycled each year.
