If there is one unquestionably good thing we can each do, it is to try to shorten the distance between farm and table. In terms of sustainability, local food trumps imported, and organic beats petro-industrial. Grow your own food, if you can, but many of us aren't in a situation to do much gardening, much less become self-sufficient.

In the US alone, consumers spent hundreds of billions of dollars in fast food alone. Modern consumers have an ambivalent relationship (characterized by guilt) with fast food, particularly in relation to children. Trans fats which are commonly found in fast food have been shown in many tests to have a negative health effect on the body. Excessive calories are another issue with fast food.
