Every year, an estimated 400 million units of obsolete electronics are scrapped. By 2010, this figure will rise to three billion units. While advances in technology continue to improve and enrich our lives, product lifecycles are getting shorter and shorter. And that means an increasing stockpile of end-of-life equipment that needs to be managed. When discarded, much of this equipment ends up in landfills in the US, or is exported to third world countries.

In the highly fragmented truckload transportation industry, a huge amount of trips involves empty trucks. However, reducing the amount of truck repositioning is difficult because the need for a carrier to reposition its vehicles depends on the interactions between the shippers the carrier is serving.

A septic tank, the key component of a septic system, is a small scale sewage treatment system common in areas with no connection to main sewage pipes provided by private corporations or local governments. In the US, approximately 25% of the population relies on septic tanks; this can include suburbs and small towns as well as rural areas. (Indianapolis is an example of a large city where much of the city's neighborhoods are still on separate septic systems) In Europe they are generally limited to rural areas only.

San Francisco has pledged to recycle 75% of the materials that would otherwise go to a landfill. While the City has performed admirably with the current figure of 72% diversion, SF Environment is still working to get their message of recycling, reuse and proper disposal out to the public.

Oil spills happen when people make mistakes or are careless and cause an oil tanker to leak oil into the ocean. These spills are usually dispersed but not cleaned up with detergents which makes oil settle to the bottom. Oils that are denser than water, such as Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), can be more difficult to clean as they make the seabed toxic.
