As environmental awareness becomes a dominant theme, it’s no surprise that green-tech learning toys are emerging. Does that mean there’s a major entrepreneurial opportunity here? Science kits will always occupy a niche within the toy industry, and those demonstrating alternative fuels and other eco-friendly technologies could stake a place alongside the rockets, microscopes and chemistry sets that are the mainstay of that market.
According to research firm The NPD Group, the "learning and exploration" toy category rang up $510.4 million in sales for 2004 alone. While retailers watched sales fall in most toy categories, sales of educational toys surged double digits. This resurgence can be attributed to a number of well marketed and innovative new product introductions into the industry, including Green Learning Toys.
